Torcross, Hallsands and Slapton: Short diversions
March 2018: As you may have seen on the news, ‘Storm Emma’ has washed away part of the A379 coast road at Slapton. Fortunately damage to the Coast Path in this area was far more limited. Just south of Torcross (Grid Ref: SX 824 419) a cliff fall has meant that a short section of the path has been moved onto a roughly parallel footpath about 50 yards inland – see map below.
At the north end of Hallsands Beach (Grid Ref: SX 818 390), the steps from the beach into the field have been washed away and so the path has been moved slightly inland.
During the Spring / Summer of 2018 there are plans to rebuild the A379 road at Slapton further inland on the shingle ridge. As part of this work, a stretch of the Coast Path will be moved from the inland side of the road to the seaward side. Whilst work is underway, access for walkers along the shingle ridge between Slapton Bridge and Strete Gate will be maintained – though note the shingle can make for heavy walking.
