Walk - Osmington Mills from Bowleaze Cove
3.6 miles (5.8 km)
Bowleaze Coveway car park - DT3 6PW Osmington Mills
Moderate - Undulating coastal path, which may be muddy in places, with some inland footpaths and quiet road.
A short walk from Bowleaze to Osmington Mills, an important geological site where a small waterfall tumbles straight onto the beach. The boulders are full of fossils and the limestone points fingers of rock into the sea, making it the perfect place for smugglers. Have lunch in the Smugglers Inn, above the beach, where 'French Peter' smoked out a customs officer hiding in the chimney. Walk back along the Coast Path, with great views of Portland and the bay, or take the last leg of the ancient South Dorset Ridgeway up to the main road at Osmington to catch a bus back to Bowleaze. (Walking both ways on the Coast Path gives a five-mile route in total. If you take the bus instead, walking back to Bowleaze at the end of the bus journey adds another half-mile to the route's three and a half miles).
