Walk - Portland Castle
3.6 miles (5.8 km)
Portland New Ground - DT5 1LF Portland New Ground
Moderate - Coastal path and old quarry tracks with some steep ascent and descent including steps. The path runs close to high unfenced cliff edges, so take care. A rugged Tramper mobility scooter is available for hire through the Countryside Mobility Scheme from the Heights Hotel. This can be used to explore Tout Quarry Nature Reserve and Sculpture Park, the King Quarry Nature Reserve and High Angle Battery. More details about this can be found on the Countryside mobility website.
A short walk around Portland's north east corner, where the remnants of the quarries' transport systems have been turned into nature reserves and the dramatic cliffs give far-ranging views over Chesil Bank and Lyme Bay. In Tout Quarry, just off the Coast Path, some of the world's top artists have contributed to a fascinating sculpture trail that meanders through the old quarry workings; while down at sea level on the island's northerly shoreline, Portland Castle has defended the harbour since Tudor times. This is an especially inspirational walk in springtime, when the limestone blocks shimmering beneath blue skies in the clear bright sunlight give Portland the air of a Greek island! Vast numbers of small birds arrive here in their spring migrations, while large flocks of terns and skuas pass on their way up the Channel and fulmars, kittiwakes and even puffins nest noisily on the West Cliffs.
