Walk - Bovisand & Hooe Lake
7.4 miles (12.0 km)
Jennycliff car park - PL9 9SW Jennycliff
Moderate - One long steady climb, with some shorter ones, as well as some stiles and flights of steps.
A delightful waterside walk past some of the forts that defended Plymouth Sound through many different periods of history. The return route passes Hooe Lake, where waterbirds and wildfowl perch on the hulks of ancient wrecks, and then loops inland through the gardens, woods and arboretum of the Radford estate. The Harris family of Radford House were bankers and backers of Tudor adventurers Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, who left their booty at Radford House for safekeeping when they sailed in from the high seas. The unfortunate Raleigh was later imprisoned here before being executed.
For a shorter walk, catch the bus back to Jennycliff at Hooe, or back to Plymouth from either Hooe or Staddiscombe. If arriving by ferry from Plymouth, start the walk just after 2.
