Walk - Lelant Station - St Ives
4.5 miles (7.2 km)
Lelant Station St Ives Station
Moderate - There is not too much ascent or descent but the path can be exposed to sea winds so wear warm clothing.
A walk to blow away the cobwebs, travelling alongside the railway line high above St Ives Bay, through an area rich in ancient history, from Stone Age times to the nineteenth century, when lookouts watched out for the pilchard shoals arriving in the bay. A good walk in spring, when the Hayle Estuary is alive with migrant birds coming and going and resident species such as oystercatchers, plovers and godwits are moving through the RSPB reserve. Porthkidney is also noted for rare wildflowers. Celtic saints left their legacy, and medieval pilgrims walked here too, past holy places marked with stone crosses.
