Walk - Limekiln Hill

On Chesil Beach the pebbles vary in size, from pieces the size of pea gravel in West Bay to cobbles as big as potatoes at Portland, and it is said that in seafaring days fishermen and smugglers knew where they had landed, even in the dark, by the size of the pebbles. This walk follows the shingle bank for a short distance before climbing the hill above to return through coastal heathland with spectacular sea views. Children will love exploring the remains of the old limekiln and a wartime bunker.
This is a good walk in springtime, when the thorn bushes on the heathland are decked in fresh foliage and tumbling blossom and the bright air is filled with birdsong, while new bracken unfurls among primroses beneath the flowering gorse.
