Walk - Devon Cliffs - West Down Beacon
3.4 miles (5.5 km)
Devon Cliffs - EX8 5BT Devon Cliffs
Moderate - There is some ascent and descent on the Coast Path, but the remainder of the walk is fairly level.
High above the red cliffs and sparkling sea of Littleham Cove the South West Coast Path travels to West Down Beacon, once a fire beacon and then during the Napoleonic Wars a signal station. From here the route turns inland, travelling along the edge of woodland before following the cycle route along the old Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton railway and then a footpath past the church where Viscountess Nelson is buried, back to Devon Cliffs. A good walk for autumn, when the heathland is vivid with gorse and heather, and birds sing from the bushes they're raiding for berries.
