Path improvement starts at Watermouth Bay

Update: Nov 22nd 2013. The new route is now open to walkers. However for the next couple of weeks, please take care, as there remain a few minor works to be required, such as fixing a handrail to the new flight of steps. Whilst this work is being undertaken, there may need to be short term closures, but the aim is to keep these to a minimum.

Work will start on the A399 at Watermouth Bay, (between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe in North Devon - Grid Ref: SS55 481) on Monday 9th September to provide a missing link on the South West Coast Path. The work is expected to take until the end of November to complete.

The project forms part of the South West Coast Path Team's 'Unlocking our Coastal Heritage' project will provide a safe alternative to the existing trail, which is currently impassable at high tide, without walking in the carriageway of the busy A399.

The work entails re-aligning the A399 further into the hillside to provide space for a footpath on the seaward side that can be used safely at all times, regardless of the level of the tide.

There will be traffic restrictions while the work is carried out and whilst the contractors will aim to minimise this, at times this section will also be closed to walkers. Since there is no nearby alternative walking route, walkers will be advised with signs on the approaches to this section to catch a bus past the works. Filers Bus services 300 and 301 run between Hele and Water Mouth Castle and will facilitate access through the closure. For bus time tables call Filers on 01271 863 819 or Traveline on 0871 2002233 or visit www.traveline.info

The project is supported by a grant from the Rural Development Programme for England with additional funds provided by Devon County Council and the the South West Coast Path Association.

Councillor Stuart Hughes Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “The lack of a permanent link to the footpath in this area has been a concern for some time, but this scheme will help improve safety. The Coast Path is a significant attraction for visitors, which helps support the local economy and I’m sure this improvement will be welcomed by the local community and walkers on the South West Coast Path. In the short term this work may cause some minor delays but every effort is being made to minimise disruption.”

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Councillor for Combe Martin Rural, said: “Thousands of visitors enjoy the South West Coast Path every year, it is a vital contributor to our local economy. We are delighted that Devon County Council has recognised the significance of the path to our area. It is a stunning land and seascape and now we can look forward to many more people, locals and visitors being able to enjoy the walk in safety.”

Steve Church, Secretary of the South West Coast Path Association said’ We have been concerned about the safety of walkers on this section for many years and this is why we offered what is our largest ever single contribution to a Coast Path improvement project. We are delighted to see it now go ahead, and offer our thanks to Devon County Council and the South West Coast Path Team for making it happen’.
