Young people learn camera skills whilst exploring the South West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA) working with CEET (Community Environmental Education Therapy) CIC has been lucky to receive funding to lead some exploration sessions with young people on the Coast Path in North Devon. Not only did the participants explore the Coast Path but they also had the added extra benefit of trying out and getting trained up on some new motion cameras.

In June 2022, two groups of young people from Marland School and Pilton College explored a section of Coast Path between Barnstaple and Braunton in North Devon. Along the journey, students created videos and took photographs, with the aim of showing how accessible the stretch of Coast Path is, and highlighting what there is to discover along the way such as its rich heritage and beautiful wildlife. They were taught how to get the best shots with expert coaching from Fotonow

Alex Turner from SWCPA explained "It was great to see the students really engage with their local area, learn new skills and enjoy their time on the Path. This formed part of wider programme of community and environmental activities they are completing with CEET CIC".

Sarah Jellard, CEET CIC said, “CEET really benefited from working with SWCPA and Fotonow. The session was incredibly engaging, and the students have since been asking when they can continue learning about photography on the SWCP. Thank you all so much.”

Laura Carolan, North Devon AONB, said “The grant panel felt that this project offered young people the chance to engage with the outdoors in a slightly different way and make them think about the surroundings whilst filming. The cameras will also be on offer to other groups to use in North Devon so are a great resource for the future”.

This project has been supported by the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s (AONB) Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) which is funded by Defra. The SDF supports projects such as this one which brings environmental, social or economic benefit to the North Devon Coast AONB.

The two new motion cameras will now be available for other groups in North Devon to borrow - one of the videos can be viewed here:
