West Cornwall provides a beautiful backdrop for Coastal Photography

With its many miles of wonderful coastal scenery, spectacular beaches, wild moorlands and great gardens, West Cornwall is a hot spot for visitors with a passion for photography.

There is a month to go until entries close for the South West Coast Path photographic competition. David Noton, an award winning landscape and travel photographer and this year’s competition judge, tells us why he is especially fond of taking photographs here in winter.

David says: “Winter on the West Cornwall coast brings stormy, moody weather, low light, big waves, dramatic skies and limitless photographic potential. It is quite frankly my favourite time of year on the South West Coast; there is nowhere else like it in the world. Photographers keen to capture the essence of the wild winter weather may get wet and windblown, but the rewards are there for the taking.”

In previous years winning images have been captured along this stretch of Coast Path, such as a stunning view of Chapel Porth in the snow by Andrew Trenoweth and a wintery sunset at Godrevy Island by Andrew Ray.

The Carbis Bay Hotel, with its very own Blue Flag beach, near St. Ives, is a great place to stay for those wanting to be near some of these great photography locations. The Hotel is a stone’s throw from the Coast Path and provides a walking and photography destination year-round, offering great food and drink and a restful stop.

Stephen Baker, Managing Director says “We are proud to continue our support for the Coast Path, and are pleased to be able to offer the prize for the winner of this fantastic competition. Our guests often comment on the far-reaching sea views from the Hotel and many thoroughly enjoy kayaking and paddle-boarding in our sheltered bay. Many visitors take memorable photographs home with them from along this beautiful coastline. We would encourage everyone to have a go and submit a photograph. If you do maybe we will have the chance to welcome you to the Hotel soon.”

A reviving foot massage is also available in their treatment room on the beach, which might be needed after going out on long photography shoots! As corporate supporters of the Coast Path they have also generously offered the prize for the winner of the photographic competition, a luxury spa stay at the Hotel.

Amateur and professional photographers, of all ages, are encouraged to enter their best pictures of the Coast Path in this annual photographic competition, which closes on December 31. This year's 12 winning photographs will feature in the South West Coast Path 2016 calendar with the 1st prize winner taking the front page.  Each copy sold raises a minimum of 25p for the South West Coast Path Association for path improvements.
