January 2026 - 3 Named Storms (Goretti, Ingrid, Chandra) in quick succession cause devastation in the South West
In January 2026, Storm Goretti caused widespread damage across the South West, with acute devastation in West Cornwall. Path managers and the community are still assessing the full impact of the storm. Storm Goretti was followed by Storm Ingrid and Storm Chandra, making January one of the wettest months for years. We are still calculating the full impact that these storms have had on the Path environment.
In 2024, there were 13 significant coastal erosion events affecting the Path: 9 named storms; Henk, Isha, Jocelyn, Kathleen, Lilian, Ashley, Bert, Conall and Darragh. Storm Darragh saw 300 trees uprooted across Exmoor National Park paths.
In 2023, Britain endured its wettest winter in 130 years, with an increased frequency in extreme storms, heavy rain and strong winds. Named storms continue to bring inclement weather events brought on by climate change that result in power outages, transport disruption and flooding across the UK, causing significant damage to land and property, particularly in coastal areas across the South West.
Storm Ciarán was classed as an exceptionally severe storm, bringing winds comparable in severity with those experienced in the south-east of England during the 'Great Storm' of 1987. The location of Storm Ciarán meant that the worst impacts occurred to the south across the English Channel, exacerbating existing flooding problems, and causing land slips, notably including a section of cliff at West Bay in Dorset which collapsed into the sea.
