Our Projects - Westhay Farm replacement bridge
The Association helped fund the National Trust replace the footbridge at Westhay Farm near Stonebarrow in Dorset. The new bridge is made of oak with larch tread, which will hopefully last even longer than the 25 years the old bridge survived.
The contractor (who also installed the original bridge) pre-fabricated the structure of the bridge in his yard, pre-cut all the treads & handrail components and then brought it all out to site one evening. He rolled up first thing the next morning with a telehandler which he used to first lift the old bridge off the gabion baskets and then lift the new structure into place. Ground anchors were used to attach the structure and then the treads and handrail were attached. He has also added a step to the eastern side of the bridge where there was a bit of a drop.
