Our Projects - Northam seawall
Two areas of sea wall supporting the South West Coast Path were severely eroded by the 2014 storms and then collapsed, and had to be closed to the public for over a year. The informal diversion was along a less favourable route on a busy road. The sea wall needed to be rebuilt using mass concrete to re-establish the existing path.
As the work was being carried out the Devon County Council Structural Engineer notified that the rock had been identified as not being as robust as was hoped, and additional concrete reinforcement was needed, which caused an increase in the final costs for this project.
The work was completed satisfactorily by South West Highways, for Devon County Council, within the time suggested, and with funding secured by the South West Coast Path Association from the Coastal Communities Fund.
