Our Projects - Hillsborough
2 The history hunters project run through North Devon Museum service and North Devon AONB afforded the opportunity to investigate several key archaeological sites around the South West Coast Path, through providing opportunities to local people for engagement with archaeological research. One of these key sites was the substantial and extant earthwork enclosure at Hillsborough, Ilfracombe. An investigation schedule of geophysical survey, was deemed appropriate. An enthusiastic volunteer force of local community members from North Devon, who had previously had no experience of archaeological survey, undertook all of the survey on the monument under the supervision of Chris Carey. The survey was undertaken over a three-day period in February 2010. Although progress was slower than on a ‘professional’ archaeological survey, coherent results were obtained that have allowed further interpretation of the site.
