Our Projects - Winnianton, Gunwalloe

11 This project consisted of 3 seasons of research and excavation carried out on coastal land adjacent to Winnianton Farm and Gunwalloe Church, located on the western coast of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. It was selected due to the threat of the ongoing coastal erosion of the site and the important archaeological resource which had been indicated to survive here. The excavations targeted areas both currently eroding and due to imminently erode. They revealed a multi-period site has been a focus firstly for burial and later for settlement for over 3000 years. The results of the evaluation have not only answered the many questions raised over the past century, but also recorded a visibly receding archaeological resource. Six trenches were opened across the coastal strip: five within a possible early-medieval settlement site, and one across the ramparts of a suspected promontory fort.
