Join in with National Trails Geocaching weekend

The second weekend in July is National Trail Geocaching weekend, which aims to encourage families to explore their nearest Trail and seek out some caches. This the first of what will be an annual event - this year it falls on the 13th and 14th July - just in time for the school holidays.

It also sees the launch of our brand new geocoins, each with its own mission, whether it's to make its way to another nearby National Trail or to complete various stages along the South West Coast Path before returning home. To begin with, we have released just 5 coins that if found, will need to be transferred to another cache that remains within 2 miles of the route of the South West Coast Path.

These beautiful geocoins feature the acorn symbol shared by all National Trails. During the course of this weekend, their mission is to visit as many geocaches along the South West Coast Path as possible. For more information about geocaching, here's a guide on the official geocaching website  to help get you started on your travels.

We'll be keeping track of progress and reporting on the coin's activity through the National Trail Facebook and Twitter accounts and sharing them with our own South West Coast Path social media sites.

We're keen for local geocachers, and local caching groups to get involved, either through setting up new individual caches or geocache trails along the routes, or by simply visiting the Coast Path and helping the coins on in their mission.

Over the next few weeks and months we will be releasing more trackable coins that will be registered with the international Geocaching website and will be inviting individuals or groups to help us release the coins. If you are interested in finding out more or to offer help in releasing them, please get in touch with us at [email protected] We'd love to hear from you.

Happy hunting!
