Discover the secret coves and sandy beaches that inspired the characters in Summer in February - the film that everyone’s talking about this summer, by following in their footsteps along the South West Coast Path.

Starring Dan Stevens, Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper and Hattie Morahan, Summer in February is the true story of a tangled love triangle between land manager Gilbert Evans and the famous Newlyn artists Florence Carter-Wood and Sir Alfred Munnings, set against the timeless beauty of the rugged Cornish coastline on the eve of the First World War.

The book and film feature various locations on the West Cornwall coastline, from the picturesque fishing village of Lamorna, where Munnings once lived and courted Florence, to the beautiful Porthcurno beach that was used as one of the locations in the film.

Here's our pick of the best walks inspired by Summer in February:

Lamorna to Mousehole 5.3 miles challenging

Gilbert and Florence enjoyed many walks along this stretch of coast and it is one such walk that inspired the film's title. It was taken from one of Gilbert's diary entries, in which he wrote about walking with Florence on the coast on a summer's day, although the date it was recorded was in February.

Holwell Bay 4.5 miles – moderate

Many of the beach scenes in Summer in February were shot at Holywell Bay, including Gilbert and Alfred on horseback where they first discuss the alluring Florence Carter-Wood. It is also where a heroic act of midwinter skinny dipping took place. 

Porthcurno and Penberth 3 miles Moderate

Porthcurno was one of the locations used in the filming of Summer in February. It’s the setting for a night-time beach party in the film but it’s best seen by day. Combine a visit here with a tour of the gardens in the grounds of the Minack Theatre, or stay for the evening to take in a summer performance.

A Twirl of the Cape – 4.8 miles moderate

Cape Cornwall was one of the locations used in the filming of Summer in February to represent events that actually took place outside the Jories Hotel in Lamorna, which is now called The Cove.

Prussia Cove was one of the locations used in the filming of Summer in February where you’ll find the seaside hovel that Gilbert Evans offers as a painting studio (and love token) to Carter-Wood. It’s here that the climactic scenes of the film play out.
