South West Coast Path To Receive £250,000
The South West Coast Path Association is delighted to announce that it has secured £250,000 in funding for improvement projects around the entire South West Coast Path, before their fundraising event has even taken place.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2013, The South West Coast Path Association started work last August to organise its Great South West Walk, with a target of £250,000 for over 50 improvement projects around the 630 miles of South West Coast Path.
With the event due to start on the south coast on April 3 and the north coast on April 16, the £250,000 has already been reached, thanks to various funding bodies and companies that have agreed to support the walk.
John Slater, who leads on Commercial Partnerships for the South West Coast Path Team explains:
“We are extremely grateful to a range of organisations that have helped us to secure our target of £250,000 which means that every penny raised by walkers will take us above and beyond our original goal. I would like to say a huge thank you to Natural England and the Rural Development Programme who have both given significant funding to support our Great South West Walk projects. There has also been fantastic support from across the tourism industry, with significant sponsorship raised from a wide range of businesses and other organisations - from walking companies and attractions to holiday cottage agencies and holiday parks.
John continued, “To date 16 of the improvement projects to the path are receiving sponsorship committed from individual businesses and over 40 of the 56 legs of the walk have been sponsored. All of this combined support means that the Great South West Walk will smash its original target of £250,000 and even more projects to improve the path can be identified.”
Over 50 improvement projects to the path will be completed by the end of 2013, with some already underway as a result of funding being secured early – with 14 projects costing £85,000 to be completed by the end of this month.
With support flowing in and the walk itself still due to take place, the original target has now been increased to £300,000 and the Association is confident that it can reach it.
John concluded: “The Great South West Walk will truly be a fantastic celebration and have extended our registration date so that even more walkers can register for the event and celebrate with us. Amidst stories of cliff falls and rumours about parts of the path being closed, we want to ensure that our message is heard far and wide - that the South West Coast Path is fully open, with some diversions in place, and that with funds raised from this event it will be here for many more years for people to enjoy.”
