South West Coast Path among world's great adventures

The South West Coast Path ranks alongside New Zealand’s Milford Track, Chile’s Torres del Paine trek and Alaska’s Chilkoot Trail as one of the world’s most awe-inspiring hikes, according to the new Great Adventures book published this month by Lonely Planet.

Described as “walking at its most diverse, most spectacular and most delicious,” the South West Coast Path is the only hike in the UK to make it into the highly respected guide book and one of 12 hikes identified across the globe. For the adventurous, the 630 miles of Coast Path is the walk of a lifetime, taking in breathtaking heritage, wildlife, geology and scenery along the way, from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset.

Mark Owen, the National Trail Officer for the South West Coast Path team, comments: “As anyone who has ever walked the South West Coast Path will attest, this is a truly breathtaking route with some of the finest scenery you will ever see. It is fantastic to have been included in Great Adventures, and especially gratifying to know that the Coast Path is up there with other high-octane hikes such as the Tour du Mont Blanc.”

The hardback book contains the world’s most thrilling adventures in 9 themed chapters; Hike, Dive, Bike, Above & Below, Climb, Ice & Snow, Animals, Water and Drive.

Among the British experiences featured in the book alongside the Coast Path are; mountain biking Coed y Brenin (north Wales), caving in the Peak District, the Three Peaks Challenge, rowing the Thames and coasteering in Pembrokeshire.

Each adventure is detailed over four pages, with practical information on how you can make it happen, as well as alternative challenges and some related armchair reading to get you in the mood. Each experience is also illustrated with beautiful images.

The British adventures feature alongside a diverse selection of incredible experiences from tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda, cycling Nepal’s Annapurna circuit and swimming with whale sharks.

Great Adventures follows the success of Great Journeys which was released last year.
