Partnership working sees improved access to popular Churston Cove in Torbay

The project, which was completed by a locally based contractor from Brixham, consisted of 32 new steps, 6 replacement steps, 1 replacement ‘ladder’ stairway, drainage gulleys, expansion of the existing moulded concrete steps leading onto the beach, as well as an installation of a new handrail. This project is another example of partners working together to deliver benefits for the people of Torbay and its visitors.

The South West Coast Path Association funded just over 30% of this project through its ‘Step Up Appeal’ thanks to a substantial donation from Macs Adventure.

Neil Lapping, CEO at Macs Adventure said, “We’re thrilled to be in partnership with the South West Coast Path to support path restoration. One of our most popular walks in the UK, we appreciate the joy this route gives to thousands of walkers every year and that maintaining it is crucial for future generations. For every Macs Adventurer who walks the route, we’re donating £5 to help the SWPCA with their necessary maintenance work.”

SWISCo on behalf of Torbay Council and Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust provided the rest of the funding as well as staff time to assist getting materials onto site and to ensure the diversion route was walkable and well signed.

Lorna Sherriff, National Trail Officer for the South West Coast Path stated, “It’s great when we work together in partnership to be able to achieve significant improvement projects which would not have been achievable working individually. I want to also say a big thank you to Macs Adventure for providing a donation to our Step Up appeal which paid for all the timber needed for this project.”

Kat Sobey from Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust said We’re delighted to work in collaboration and complete the necessary repairs to the steps at Churston Cove. Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust care for over 40 miles of foot paths and bridleways in Torbay, and as a conservation charity, we’re very grateful to our valued members who help support and fund important projects such as this.”
