A step in the right direction

One of the first of 1,000 new steps to be installed on the South West Coast Path was unveiled this week to thank supporters of #40FOR40, a fundraising campaign aimed at raising money for the Coast Path.

The South West Coast Path Association, the charity that champions and protects the National Trail, presented the specially engraved step to Devon-based natural dog food makers Forthglade, who were one of the first businesses to get behind the campaign. Part of Forthglade’s generous donation has enabled the SWCPA to invest in 50 new oak steps, which will help make the Path more accessible to walkers and dog walkers alike.

Joint Managing Director for Forthglade, Gerard Lovell, accompanied by his dog Bo met with Becky Millington from the South West Coast Path Association in North Devon to see the area in which the new oak steps will be placed. Gerard, who lives near Sidmouth said, “My family feel so lucky to live in an area where we can enjoy the Coast Path and all its wonderful views, and the entire 630 miles is dog-friendly, so our family dog Bo gets to enjoy it as much as we do! Everyone at Forthglade is thrilled to be helping to keep the Path well maintained so that future generations can enjoy it.”

The South West Coast Path Association launched the community fundraiser #40FOR40 in May to mark the Path’s 40th anniversary. So far, the Association has raised over £20,000 and aims to double this by the end of October through a number of fundraising events. In October, there will be a range of activities for people to get involved with as part of the charity’s annual South West Coast Path Challenge month. Forthglade will be continuing to show their support by organising a charity dog walk for the Challenge. In addition, dog lovers will get the chance to win some great prizes by entering a picture of their pooch into a ‘Top Dog Walks’ photo competition sponsored by Forthglade early next year.

Ken Carter, Chairman for the South West Coast Path Association said, “It’s brilliant to have the support of local businesses like Forthglade. The South West Coast Path is such an important asset for the region. Not only does it give us a way to connect with our natural surroundings, it also supports thousands of jobs and drives the local economy, so it really is very special to see people wanting to give back to the Path that gives so much.”
