A great day out on the Dorset coast wins ‘Beside the Sea’ photography competition

A photograph taken using a mobile phone, of a walker on the Dorset coast on a sunny day, has been chosen as the winner of a photography competition run by the South West Coast Path Association.

Hundreds of entries were received in the annual ‘Beside the Sea’ photography competition that aims to showcase the various ways in which people enjoy a great day out on the coast in springtime and early summer.

The competition was supported once again by South West Water, the lead sponsor of the Association. Together, and as part of the BeachWise coastal partnership (, they are encouraging people to enjoy their days out by the seaside, safe in the knowledge that the South West boasts some of the cleanest beaches in the UK.

Competition judge, Alius Rimavicius, the latest winner of an annual photo competition run by South West Water’s parent company, Pennon Group, picked the winners.

He said: “There were lots of stunning photos and it was really hard to choose between them. The winning image by Gillian Healey, captured the essence of the South West Coast Path and its breathtaking views of dramatic scenery, enjoyed by an intrepid walker caught unawares by the camera.”

The photograph shows a walker descending the cliffs along the Coast Path between White Nothe and Durdle Door, with the white chalk cretaceous rocks of the Jurassic coastline stretching out before him and the calm sea gently lapping the beach below.

On winning the competition, Gillian Healey, a Totnes based graphic designer said:

“The camera on mobile phones are so amazing these days making it the perfect travel companion when walking. I never go walking without mine as it's all about 'that moment' that you don't expect.

“It could be the perfect light, calm sea, amazing view. Get those right and you're onto a great photo.

“For this particular photo, I used Instagram Amero filter which really highlights those summer hues."

Alius also made comment on Kerenza Jelbert’s candid shot of her dad holding her dog, as a close runner-up, saying;

“It’s an endearing image of a man and his best friend enjoying the fresh sea air on a busy day at the beach in West Cornwall.”

Kerenza said: “Happiest when walking in the coast path down here in West it! Aim for this year is to get up to Tintagel.”

Millions of people from all walks of life flock to the coastline in the South West every year to enjoy its spectacular coastline and one of the best ways to explore it is on foot with a walk along the South West Coast Path.
