Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust have just completed work to improve a flight of 80 steps on the South West Coast Path at Oddicombe, thanks to the support of businesses and individuals from Babbacombe and the surrounding area.

The Trust began work to improve the old and unsightly flight of steps adjacent to the Babbacombe Cliff Railway in November, replacing the dilapidated and uneven steps with new surfacing improving both the appearance of the area and usability.  A viewing area has also been created along with two new benches, new way markers and signage.

Countryside Manager from Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, Chris Lingard, said: “It has been great to see local support for the South West Coast Path and the donations and money raised reflects its importance as a fantastic asset for Torbay.”

The Babbacombe Steps project was an initiative through the South West Cost Path Team to link local businesses with the Coast Path and its users.   Over £3,800 was raised in donations from local businesses and individuals to support the project and a plaque will soon be installed at the area to mark their support.  The donations helped attract funding for the balance of the work from the Rural Development Programme for England, a European grant.

The National Trail officer who coordinates the maintenance of the South West Coast Path, Mark Owen, said; “I'm sure this work will be much appreciated by the many locals and visitors who walk these paths, and it was only thanks to the support of local businesses and individuals that we were able to unlock European funding to help pay for it.”

Donations from businesses included: The Cary Arms, South Devon Ramblers, Babbacombe & St Marychurch Traders and St Marychurch & District Ward Partnership with additional donations from individuals who each sponsored a step: Emily Christian, Jane Christian, William Becher, John and Josie Coward, Jill Gillian, Tony and Lisa Riseley, David and Jacqueline Blenkinsopp, Jim and Jackie Rowley.
