Step up to a new Challenge on the South West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path Association will be at the Devon County Show this week launching the South West Coast Path Challenge, a new event taking place throughout October 2015.

The event aims to get people walking anywhere between 1 mile to 100 miles or the entire 630 mile route, in a bid to set the record for the number of times people can collectively walk or run, the equivalent distance to, the length of the South West Coast Path in one month.

It can be any type of challenge, whether it’s someone’s first Coast Path walk following a major operation, or a family setting out to walk with distant relatives, every step counts.

This fundraising event will also help raise awareness of the need to protect the coastline.

Hayley Partridge, South West Coast Path Events Officer says;

“I am really looking forward to seeing the different Challenges that people create to add their miles to the record. I am hoping to see families and friends get together to challenge each other to attempt new sections of the South West Coast Path and have a great day out while supporting our beautiful Coast Path at the same time!”

The National Trust, which this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of its coastline appeal, is the event’s charity partner.

Mark Harold, Regional Director of the National Trust says;

“With over 300 miles of coastline in the South West owned and cared for by the National Trust, the South West Coast Path is the golden thread that joins our coastal outdoors sites together.

“We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Association on their flagship event as part of our coastal festival celebrations this year and look forward to seeing how many miles we can clock up in one month.”

Registered participants will soon be able to create their own challenge via an interactive online event page, or they will have the option to join a 10 mile organised Challenge event. These will take place across the region with one in each county through which the Coast Path travels, including Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

Visitors to the Association’s stand at Devon County Show, from 21-23 May, which it will share with its lead sponsor, South West Water, will have the chance to find out more about the event and how they can get involved. Plus, there will the chance to win a holiday voucher with Toad Hall Cottages to put towards a stay in any one of their properties along the South West Coast Path.
