South Devon projects

In recent years, money raised from the South West Coast Path Association has helped fund many improvement and path repair projects in South Devon.

On the south Devon stretch of the coast path lots of sandy beaches welcome 100,000 visitors a year to enjoy a spot of sandcastle building, a well earned icecream and the chance to promenade along the coast with family and friends. A sheltered part of the path, in the main, it has been in the news in recent years for the severing of the rail link at Dawlish as well as other areas that were badly affected by the winter storms of 2014 with land slides and cliff falls cutting off or diverting the path for long stretches of time.

Projects carried out along this stretch from Plymouth to Starcross have reflected this areas high levels of visitor numbers and the need for storm damage repairs. As you'll see from the list below we and our partners have been very busy lately. Many of the storm repairs were carried out by Devon County Council and Network Rail.

Particular projects that stand out are; Revelstoke Drive repairs near Noss Mayo to enable easier access for walkers and families with pushchairs after the path became impassable under six inches of mud and the creation of an easy access path at Bolberry Down.

Future projects in this area that require further funding include installing a zig zag path at Clematon Hill rather than the existing flight of steps, and so enable families with pushchairs to get from the beach back to the overflow car park. Read about these and other Future Projects HERE. Other new projects are continually being considered by Coast Path local representative volunteers and Association staff with their local rangers on the ground.
