Evolution of the Challenge

People have been doing amazing things on the Trail, for the Trail through the South West Coast Path Challenge since it first launched in 2015.

From 2015-2018, the Challenge took place every October and was run primarly as a programme of guided, themed walks in partnership with our friends at the National Trust. It raised money for the work that both charities undertake to protect and improve the Trail.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of our brilliant fundraisers over the years, we raised more than £42,000 for the two charities, to help fund projects in various locations around the Trail.

For example, some of the fundraised income from the 2018 event is being spent on an improvement project on National Trust land in South Devon. This will see two difficult to use gates at Prawle Point upgraded on a stretch of the Trail which is featured in a set of circular walking routes on new information points in the area.

2019 onwards - we support you to Challenge yourself

The Challenge is now no longer just for October. Since the success of our fundraiser for the Coast Path’s 40th anniversary in 2018, lots of you awesome people have been in touch throughout the year telling us you want to take action to protect the Trail that gives you so much. From 2019 the Challenge will run year-round, meaning that you can Challenge yourself to do something amazing for the Path, on the Path, when it suits you. We are providing all the resources and support you will need to do this.

Whilst we are no-longer running a formal programme of walks in October with the National Trust, you can still combine your love for the Association and the Trust by fundraising for both charities as part of your South West Coast Path Challenge. You can split your fundraising between multiple causes using a Virgin Money Giving page.

How we work with the National Trust to care for the Path:

"The National Trust and South West Coast Path Association work together to protect the Coast Path for future generations. The Association champions the Path and hosts the National Trail team whilst the National Trust owns and manages over 170 miles of the Trail. By combining forces our long-term and strong partnership has improved funding, management and engagement of one of the world’s best Trails." - Julian, Director of the Coast Path Association

“As a landowner and asset manager for nearly one third of the South West Coast, the National Trust recognises a strong synergy between both charities’ visions. Working together, we can greatly enhance our ability to deliver a better Coast Path, an enhanced coastal environment, more significant engagement and support, and more secure financial footing for the coast and Coast Path looking to the future.” - Sarah, External Affaird Advisor for the National Trust
